The iconic Sixth St. district in Austin, Texas is set for a transformative facelift, following the city council’s approval of a resolution to establish new design standards. Endorsed have been plans for building structures up to 140 ft high, in the area between Sabine and Neches streets – covering the integral 500 and 600 blocks. The ruling clears the path for Stream Realty Partners LP, the owners of about 40 properties along Sixth St, to transform the much-loved nightlife hangout into a vibrant mixed-use hub.
Stream is partnering with local design firm Clayton Korte for the project. Their joint objective is creating a more walkable, pedestrian-friendly environment, incorporating residential and retail spaces into this party-centric strip. The 500-block is expected to accommodate a five-floor hotel, with 150 to 160 rooms escalating over 70 ft. Meanwhile, a 122-ft residential tower, comprising more than ten floors, is on the plans for the 600-block.
In addition to these, the redevelopment plan incorporates enhancements like the expansion of sidewalks to accommodate more outdoor dining spaces. Prospects of a new music venue along with other attractions are in the works. All these upgrades are designed to preserve and uphold the historic valence of this district.
