Waco’s downtown could be in for a tasty treat as local developer Peter Ellis has designs to revitalize 1726 Austin Ave. with a historic Texas staple – H-E-B. The proposed spot is a two-story building that was home to one of the city’s first H-E-B grocery stores back in 1950. This iconic structure spans 38,740 square feet and is set to host the majority of the grocery store. Ellis also intends to lease out a generous 10,000 square feet for other local businesses to thrive alongside the H-E-B.
Ellis has sought a $1.1 million injection from the recently established Tax Increment Financing Zone No. 4 to support the project. The city manager has leaned in favor of a considerable $486,000 award. Additionally, there are ongoing talks about tapping the federal American Rescue Plan Act funds to see the project through.
All things going according to plan, the doors of the new H-E-B branch would be open to the eager folks of Waco come late 2024. For the full details of this exciting development, visit the original article [here](https://www.recenter.tamu.edu/news/newstalk-texas/?Item=30031).
